Top EU court bars mass collection of mobile, Internet data

Noble Horvath

Oct. 6 (UPI) — The European Court of Justice ruled Tuesday that member states cannot collect mobile and Internet data en masse, saying it’s illegal to gather such “general and indiscriminate information.”

The court ruling answered several cases brought by Privacy International and La Quadrature du Net.

Austrian privacy advocate Max Schrems had filed a lawsuit based on work by whistle-blower Edward Snowden that showed the United States doesn’t offer sufficient protection against surveillance by public authorities. His lawsuit opened the initial inquiry that lead to Tuesday’s decision.

“EU law precludes national legislation requiring a provider of electronic communications services to carry out the general and indiscriminate transmission or retention of traffic data and location data for the purpose of combating crime in general or of safeguarding national security,” the court said in a statement.

The court ruled in recent years that prevailing EU law bars member states from mandating

Internet, incentives top agenda items at upcoming PHL business conference

Noble Horvath

PHILIPPINE businesses will ask the government to improve internet connectivity and provide longer-term incentives in some of the potential recommendations at the upcoming 46th Philippine Business Conference and Expo (PBC&E).

The conference will be held online on Oct. 7 and 8, during which the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI) will present its resolutions to the government.

Among the recommendations collected from regional meetings were longer-term fiscal and non-fiscal incentives, PBC&E Chair Eunina Mangio said.

“(This will) ensure the survival and recovery of businesses to continue providing employment,” she said.

PCCI is also asking the national government to step up the automation and digitalization of government processes, which Ms. Mangio said will reduce physical contact during the pandemic.

“The national government (should) provide incentives for companies to digitalize, automate, and undertake programs to upskill and reskill their human resources,” she said.

The PCCI will also ask the government

Leader board mirrors top of world rankings and other takeaways from Day 1 of Tour Championship | Golf World

Noble Horvath

The first day of the last week of the season is finished. Sure, this may not exactly feel like a grand finale, with no fans at East Lake and a U.S. Open looming less than two weeks away. But it’s the Tour Championship all the same, and with the FedEx Cup in the balance it’s still the richest week in golf by something like $60 million . . . so, yeah, a rather important week indeed.

This is the second year of the new hybrid format, where the points leader heading into the week started the tournament at 10 under, the guy in second at eight under, etc. What results is a weekend-afternoon feel from the jump, with “leaders” playing from ahead as soon as they hit their first tee shots and “chasers” needing low ones to close the gap. So far, the guys who came in on top—Dustin Johnson

UCLA students urge replacement of top computer science professor

Noble Horvath

Students at the University of California Los Angeles are calling for the replacement of a computer science department chair appointed just weeks earlier, claiming he is “unfit to serve” in the role.

An online petition they started accuses Professor Eliezer Gafni of showing “disregard for the racialized experiences of people of color in the United States” and “disinterest in open communication between all students and UCLA Computer Science administration.”

Representatives for UCLA didn’t immediately respond to a Fox News request for comment.

Gafni had previously served as the interim chair for the department before being named to the position permanently in August.
