If you’re still upset over Netflix’s cancellation of The Society, you are certainly not alone. The show’s abrupt end caused quite a stir, especially since the series had already been renewed for a second season prior to it being cancelled.

In new interviews, “The Society” creator Christopher Keyser says he wasn’t surprised by the show’s cancellation despite the fact that it was renewed for season two.
Now the creator of The Society is revealing that the news wasn’t too much of a surprise, especially with everything that had been going on behind the scenes.
“I got a call from Netflix saying, ‘We have made this decision.’ It was obviously pretty upsetting and abrupt. We were dealing with Netflix and the rise in the budget and all of that kind of stuff… There were ongoing conversations — we knew that there were challenges for this,” Christopher Keyser told CBR. “I can’t pretend I’m surprised. I know we had many months of conversations about the challenges of producing in this environment.”
In another interview with Deadline, he noted that saying goodbye to the show was the hardest part.
“This was a very tough cancellation. We were, for the second time this year, getting ready to go back into production. Everyone had waited so long for this moment — for the chance to be together again,” he said “Saying goodbye so abruptly was the hardest thing I’ve had to do in all my years making shows. We knew we had challenges stemming from the pandemic, but the final decision to cancel us was not something I expected.”
While the show might not be coming back for another season, Christopher says that the story still isn’t 100 percent over.
“I’d love to share the continuing story of New Ham at some point,” he said. “All the scripts were written, so we know it all. We have fifteen characters in search of — I guess — not so much an author as an audience. I’ll need some time to figure that out — talk to Netflix about it — but that would be the plan.”
Christopher also mentioned the giant fan reaction that the news has gotten, noting that it’s a bit bittersweet given the situation.
“The fan reaction is wonderful. It’s tough not to feel great about that,” he said. “I’d prefer to be alive, but it’s good to be missed.”
